Let’s be real: laundry can feel like a never-ending cycle of “how did this even happen?” Add in kids, pets, and real life—and suddenly you’re a stain removal expert by default. But if you’re feeling like the stains are winning, I’ve got you covered.
I created a free printable Stain-Fighting Cheat Sheet for those of us who just want simple, fast, and actually helpful steps to save our clothes without losing our minds.
Here are 5 easy tips I swear by—plus one bonus routine that has saved me more than once from having to rewash the entire hamper.
1. Treat It Fast
The faster you get to a stain, the better your chances. Blot it with cold water (not hot!) and avoid rubbing, which just pushes the stain in deeper. Keep a stash of clean rags or paper towels nearby and act fast.
2. DIY Stain Spray That Actually Works
My favorite mix:
- 1 cup hydrogen peroxide
- 1 tbsp dish soap
- 1 tbsp baking soda
Mix it in a spray bottle and keep it handy. Spray it on the stain, let it sit for 10–20 minutes, then wash like normal. It’s saved everything from ketchup to crayon.
3. Club Soda Isn’t Just for Drinks
Yep—pour club soda on wine, coffee, or juice stains. Blot gently, pretreat, and wash. Magic. ✨
4. Don’t Put It in the Dryer… Yet
If there’s any trace of a stain left, do not heat-dry it. That will bake the stain in for good. Let it air dry and check again. This one step has saved me so much regret.
5. Use a Toothbrush
A soft toothbrush is perfect for gently scrubbing stain remover into fabric, especially tricky spots like shirt collars, cuffs, and armpits. It gets in there without damaging the material.
BONUS: Do a Weekly Stain Patrol
Instead of tossing stained clothes back into the mix or forgetting about them, keep a small bin just for them. I do a quick “stain patrol” once a week so nothing sits too long and I don’t have to panic-search for my stain spray on a busy morning.
