Candles flickering, a soft playlist on, the house smelling like vanilla or citrus sunshine… yes, please.
But here’s the thing:
Most store-bought candles aren’t just releasing pretty scents — they’re filling your home with toxic fumes.
🕯️ What’s Actually in That Candle?
It shocked me to learn that many popular candles are made with paraffin wax — a byproduct of petroleum.
When burned, paraffin candles release benzene, toluene, and formaldehyde — all linked to respiratory issues, hormone disruption, and even cancer in long-term exposure.
And if your candle is artificially scented (most are), you’re also inhaling phthalates and synthetic fragrance chemicals that are known endocrine disruptors.
According to the EPA, indoor air can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air — and candles are a major contributor.
😮 And If You Have Kids or Pets…
Let’s talk fire hazard.
Every year, over 7,000 house fires are started by candles. That’s not a statistic I want to gamble with when I’ve got kids, dogs, and let’s be honest, a busy, distracted mom brain.
Between the hidden toxins and the safety risk, I realized it was time for a change.
✨ What I Use Instead: Safer Scent Swaps
I’ve slowly swapped my old candles and plug-ins for these safer, non-toxic options:
✅ Essential Oil Diffusers
No smoke, no flame, no synthetic scents — just pure plant oils diffused into the air.
They smell incredible and actually help support my mood, focus, and sleep. (Bonus: my kids and dogs aren’t breathing in anything harmful!)
✅ Beeswax or Soy Candles
If I still want a cozy flicker, I’ll light a clean-burning candle made with natural wax and essential oils. These don’t release the same harmful VOCs as paraffin.
✅ DIY Room Sprays & Simmer Pots
A quick spritz of a homemade essential oil spray freshens up the whole room, or I’ll toss citrus peels and herbs into a pot of water on the stove to simmer naturally.

- 3 drops Lemon
- 3 drops Grapefruit
- 2 drops Lime

- 2 drops Rosemary

- 4 drops Lavender
- 2 drops Frankincense
- 1 drop Cedarwood

- 1 drop Bergamot

Sleepytime Snuggle
- 3 drops Lavender
- 2 drops Peace & Calming

Want to DIY Your Own Room Spray?
Try this super simple recipe:
- 10 drops of essential oil (Lavender + Lemon is a fav!)
- 1 tsp witch hazel or vodka
- Fill the rest of a 2 oz glass bottle with distilled water
- Shake and spray on linens, in the bathroom, or anywhere you want a refresh!
💡 Start Small, Mama
You don’t need to toss everything at once. Start by swapping out one candle. Try one diffuser blend. See how it feels.
I’ll tell you this — since I made the switch, my headaches have lessened, my home smells amazing, and I breathe easier knowing I’m making healthier choices for my family.
